Mobile Puncture Repair - 24/7 mobile callout

A puncture repair is cheaper than a tyre and, done properly, is a permanent fix. Done improperly - an external plug pushed in from the outside without removing the tyre from the rim - it is a liability, because nobody has inspected the inside of the casing for the damage the object caused on its way in.

A correct repair means the tyre comes off the wheel, the inside is inspected, the injury is reamed and filled, and a combined plug-and-patch unit is applied from the inside. That is the only method that meets the British Standard.

A picture of the damage usually settles whether it can be repaired before anyone sets off - which means we arrive with the right tyre rather than making a second trip. Leave the object where it is.

When a puncture can be repaired - and when it cannot

The governing standard in the UK is BS AU 159. It restricts repairs to the central portion of the tread - broadly the middle three quarters of the tread width. Damage in the shoulder or the sidewall is not repairable at any price, because that part of the casing flexes continuously and no repair will hold.

The injury also has to be small. For a passenger car tyre the limit is 6mm across. Beyond that the structural damage is too great, regardless of where it sits.

A tyre is also written off if the cords are exposed, if it has been run flat or seriously underinflated and the inner liner shows the crumbling and scoring that indicates the casing has overheated, if there is a bulge or lump suggesting internal separation, if it is already below the legal tread limit, or if there is an existing repair overlapping the new one.

None of this is discretionary. A garage that repairs outside the standard is exposing you to a tyre that can fail without warning, and it invalidates any argument you would have in an insurance claim.

Which part of a car tyre can be repairedA plan view of the tread. Only the central portion - roughly the middle three quarters of the tread width - may be repaired, and only where the damage is no more than 6mm across. The shoulders and both sidewalls cannot be repaired at any price, because they flex continuously and no repair will hold.6mm maxREPAIRABLE - central ¾ of the treadShoulderShoulderSidewallSidewallHatched areas cannot be repaired at any price
Under BS AU 159 a car tyre may only be repaired within the central portion of the tread, and only where the injury is 6mm or less. Damage in a shoulder or a sidewall is not repairable - that part of the casing flexes through every revolution and no patch will stay bonded to it.

Run-flats and why they are treated differently

Run-flat tyres have reinforced sidewalls that support the vehicle for a limited distance - usually up to 50 miles at up to 50mph - after a total loss of pressure. That reinforcement is also why the repair question is different.

Several manufacturers do not permit run-flats to be repaired at all. Where a repair is permitted, it depends entirely on whether the tyre was driven while deflated: once it has been run flat, the sidewall support ring has done its job and been heat-damaged in the process, and the tyre is scrap even though it may look perfect from outside. The only way to know is to remove it and inspect the inner liner, which is exactly what we do before making a judgement.

If you can see the object - a screw, a nail, a bolt head - send us a photo on WhatsApp before we come out. Where the damage sits relative to the shoulder usually settles the repair-versus-replace question immediately, which means we arrive with the right tyre on the van rather than making a second trip.

Do not pull the object out. It is holding pressure in, and its position tells us the angle it went in at.

How it works

How a puncture repair job runs

No garage. No tow truck. No waiting room. A qualified fitter at your location, fast.

  1. 01

Send a photo of the damage

WhatsApp a picture of the tyre showing where the object has gone in. Leave the object in place - its position tells us most of what we need to know.

  2. 02

    We assess repairability

Tread area and under 6mm is usually repairable. Shoulder, sidewall, or a tyre already run flat is not, and we will tell you so before we set off.

  3. 03

    Tyre off, casing inspected

The tyre is removed from the rim and the inner liner is examined for the damage the object caused going in, and for any sign the tyre has run underinflated.

  4. 04

    Repaired, balanced, refitted

A combined plug-and-patch is applied from the inside, the wheel is rebalanced, pressures are set and the wheel is torqued correctly.

FAQ

Mobile Puncture Repair - common questions

Straight answers to the things people actually want to know before they call - including the ones that cost us a sale.

Can my puncture be repaired, or do I need a new tyre?

It depends on where the damage is and how big it is. Under BS AU 159, the British Standard governing tyre repairs, a puncture can only be repaired within the central portion of the tread - roughly the middle three quarters of the tread width - and the injury must be no more than 6mm across on a passenger car tyre.

Damage in the shoulder or the sidewall cannot be repaired at any price, because that part of the tyre flexes continuously and no repair will hold. A tyre is also scrap if the cords are showing, if it has been driven on while flat or badly underinflated, if there is a bulge suggesting internal separation, or if it is already below the legal tread limit.

Send us a photo on WhatsApp before we come out and we can usually tell you straight away. Leave the object in place - where it sits, and the angle it went in at, is most of the answer.

Can a run-flat tyre be repaired?

Sometimes, but often not. Several vehicle manufacturers do not permit run-flat repairs at all.

Where a repair is permitted, the deciding factor is whether the tyre was driven while deflated. A run-flat supports the car on its reinforced sidewall after a total loss of pressure, and doing that heat-damages the support structure. Once it has been run flat, the tyre is scrap even though it can look perfect from the outside.

The only way to know is to take the tyre off the rim and inspect the inner liner, which is what we do before making a judgement.

How quickly can you get to me?

It depends entirely on where you are. Enter your postcode on any page and you will get the callout time for that specific area rather than a national average.

In the areas we cover with our own vans, arrival is typically 20 to 30 minutes. That is an estimate under typical conditions and is subject to traffic, demand and your exact location - it is not a guarantee. Outside those areas we will not quote a time we cannot stand behind; we will take the details and come back to you with a realistic one.

What is the legal tread depth in the UK?

For cars, the legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread and around the entire circumference of the tyre.

The penalty for driving on a tyre below that is up to £2,500 and three penalty points - per tyre. A car with four illegal tyres can therefore attract twelve points, which is enough to lose a licence.

Most tyre professionals and road safety organisations recommend replacing at 3mm rather than running to the limit, because wet braking distances deteriorate sharply once the grooves no longer have the volume to clear standing water.
