A wheel and tyre assembly is never perfectly uniform. Small variations in the tyre casing, the rim and even the valve mean the mass is not distributed evenly around the axis, and at road speed that imbalance turns into a rotating force that you feel through the car.

Balancing measures the imbalance on a machine and corrects it with counterweights. Our vans carry a balancer, so it is done at the point of fitting rather than skipped.

What an out-of-balance wheel feels like

A front wheel out of balance shows up as a vibration through the steering wheel, usually appearing around 50mph, peaking somewhere between 55 and 70mph, and often easing again above that. A rear wheel out of balance is felt through the seat and the floor rather than the steering, which is why people frequently misdiagnose it as a driveline problem.

The vibration is not just uncomfortable. The tyre is losing and regaining contact with the road many times a second, which scrubs the tread into uneven patches, and the same oscillating load is transmitted into the wheel bearings, the suspension bushes and the steering components.

Static and dynamic imbalance

Static imbalance is a heavy spot at one point around the wheel - it makes the assembly hop vertically. Dynamic imbalance is a heavy spot offset to one side of the wheel's centreline, which makes the wheel try to steer itself side to side as it rotates, a wobble rather than a hop.

Correcting both requires weight on both the inner and outer plane of the rim, which is what a modern spin balancer calculates. For alloy wheels, adhesive weights are applied inside the rim barrel where they are hidden and cannot damage the finish; steel wheels normally take clip-on weights at the rim edge.

When balancing is not the answer

If a vibration persists after balancing, the cause is elsewhere. A buckled rim will not balance out - it can be brought within tolerance on the machine while still running out of true, and it will still shake the car. Radial or lateral force variation within the tyre casing itself produces the same symptom.

A vibration that appears under braking rather than at a steady speed is not a balance problem at all - that is normally disc thickness variation. A vibration that changes with cornering load points to a wheel bearing. And a steering pull rather than a vibration is an alignment or tyre conicity issue. Is wheel balancing included or is it extra?

Included. Our vans carry a balancer, so every tyre we fit is machine balanced before the wheel goes back on. It is not an optional extra and it is not charged separately.

My steering wheel vibrates at 60mph. Is that the tyres?

Usually it is wheel balance. An imbalance in a front wheel typically appears around 50mph and peaks between 55 and 70mph. If you feel it through the seat rather than the steering wheel, it is more likely a rear wheel.

If it only happens under braking, that is not balance - that is normally disc thickness variation. If the car pulls to one side rather than vibrating, that is alignment or tyre conicity. And a wheel that is physically buckled will still shake the car after balancing.

We will tell you which of those we think it is rather than balancing repeatedly and charging you each time.
